Fwd: water balloon story, version for our blog

Hello family and friends,

Last Saturday night we had a party at church.  Everyone was asked to do something special for the Christmas season.  I am no singer so I selected to read a story I wrote about one of my many  lifeguard experiences.  One of the pastors asked if he could reword it, add a picture and post it on his bolg site.

I am sending it to you because it is a good story to share.

Click on the blog below to see the story.

Merry Christmas to all.

Fwd: Relay for Life

Hello everyone,

The following is a message I just received from the lifeguards. They are entering a 24 hour relay race to support The American Cancer Society.  You can run in the race and /or make a donation in the name of The Laguna Beach Marine Safety Association.  Just follow the guidelines in the message. Seems like a good way to support our lifeguard department.

Contact Jack Bond <lbmsa.outreach@gmail.com> if you have any questions.

Good Morning Dale and Marilyn,

Our lifeguard association participates in the Relay for Life each year. It is coming up very shortly, and our president said I should forward you the email sent to our current members.

The Relay for Life is a 24-hour relay put on by the American Cancer Society where we celebrate those who have won the battle against cancer, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and fight back for a cure.

It has been a big part of our association and we are trying to continue its success by donating our time and money to this fantastic cause.

If you know anyone who can or would like to contribute, please send this email along.

The links below will guide you to the Relay website, where you can learn more about the event. Our team name is the Laguna Beach Marine Safety Association, so look for us on the Relay website when submitting a donation!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Best Regards,

Memorial services for Ben Carlson

Hello everyone,

The final plans for the memorial services for Ben Carlson have been completed.

This Sunday there will be a paddleout near the Newport Pier at 9 AM.  This is primarily a time for family and friends.  Then there will be an evening memorial on the beach at Tower 68, near Orange Street.  This will be a time for everyone to participate.  This is where we can show our respect for his life, to give encouragement to his family and to honor him for his service to the community.

I was touched to hear that several lifeguard departments have offered to help the Newport Lifeguard Department by covering their towers so the Newport guards may participate in the memorial services.   This will be a strong example of how lifeguards stand together and care for one another especially during a time of great sorrow.

Lifeguard drowns

This message is for those who might not have been able to read a local paper today. More information will come out in the next few days, but this is enough to let you know that one of our own died while attempting to serve his community.

Dale Ghere
guarded 1960-74

Newport Beach lifeguard drowned Sunday during a rescue attempt near the city's pier. Officials said it was the first time a city lifeguard had died in the line of duty.

Ben Carlson, a 15-year veteran Newport Beach lifeguard, drowned Sunday during a rescue attempt near the city's pier. (NewportBeachLG)

Ben Carlson, a 15-year veteran Newport Beach lifeguard, was pulled from the ocean by colleagues, officials announced during an evening news conference. They had been frantically searching for him after he disappeared under 10-foot waves while attempting to rescue a swimmer, authorities said. As Carlson, 32, reached the swimmer, both were hit by the waves; the swimmer made it back to shore, but Carlson disappeared.

The loss shocked the close-knit public safety department in Newport Beach.

"It's been a very difficult time," said police Sgt. Penny Freeman.

Newport Beach has experienced dangerous rip currents since Friday, and lifeguards have been busy during the holiday weekend making rescues, Freeman said. There was another near-drowning earlier Sunday, she said.

Carlson "was in the water to effect a rescue and had some distress at that time," Freeman said. More details will be forthcoming as the investigation into what happened gets underway, she said.

Newport Beach Fire Chief Scott Post said Carlson entered the water just after 5 p.m. Lifeguards located him about 8 p.m. and delivered him to waiting paramedics on the pier. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

It was a tragic ending to what had been a crowded and sunny weekend at one of Southern California's most picturesque coastlines. Twitter quickly filled with condolences.

Fwd: Headquarters opening

Hello everyone,

Thanks to Mitch we have a photo history of the opening day of the new HQ.  Enjoy the photos. What a nice new facility the guards have.  In the entry there is a great tribute to Dean Westgaard.  The sculpture of a pair of fins and a rescue tube was made by Cassie Parlette.

The board made from the redwood I gave to Jeff Quam can be seen in frames 3 and 4.

Summer is here and the water is warm.  Have a great day.
